Advancement

The journey through Scouts BSA is marked by rank advancement, which recognizes a Scout's growth in skills, leadership, and character. Each rank builds upon the previous one, teaching important life skills and values.

  • Scout

    The first rank in Scouts BSA, Scout teaches the fundamentals of Scouting ideals and prepares new members to begin their advancement journey.

  • Tenderfoot

    Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks are oriented toward learning and practicing skills that will help Scouts develop confidence and fitness, challenge their thought processes, introduce them to their responsibilities as citizens, and prepare them for exciting and successful Scouting experiences.

  • Second Class

    Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks are oriented toward learning and practicing skills that will help Scouts develop confidence and fitness, challenge their thought processes, introduce them to their responsibilities as citizens, and prepare them for exciting and successful Scouting experiences.

  • First Class

    The first of the higher ranks focusing on leadership development, community service, and merit badge achievement.

    The second-highest rank emphasizing sustained leadership, extensive community service, and preparation for Eagle Scout.

    The highest achievement in Scouts BSA, earned by only about 4% of Scouts, representing exceptional leadership, service, and character.
